Claims that Americans are not ready for the impeachment of Donald J. Trump are ringing hollow. In March, only one representative, Al Green (TX-09) was willing to pursue the constitutional remedy for unfit President Donald J Trump. Just three months later, 79 members of Congress responded to their constituents’ call for impeachment now, voting to take up the question of impeachment on June 24, 2025.
We Are Ready
Americans have been ready for impeachment since April. The first poll on impeachment, from Data for Progress in late April, already showed evidence of widespread support for Trump’s impeachment – 84% of Democrats supported the move, as did nearly one in five Republicans.
Then came June 14th’s “No Kings” rallies across the country, which added to the evidence that many Americans want impeachment. USA Today reported that over 5 million people participated in over 2,100 rallies across all 50 states. Themes of impeachment, conviction and removal showed up across these rallies, both at the individual level and with support from some organizers.
Since then, new lawlessness from the President, including attacks on Iran without Congress’ authorization, prompted Rep. Al Green (TX-09) to bring an article of impeachment to the House floor for a vote on June 24th. In the aftermath of the vote where 79 Representatives supported forwarding impeachment, members of the House who had not supported the article were pummeled by constituents. In letters to the editor, on local radio and newspapers, and in interviews, constituents demanded explanations from their Representatives who did not support Rep. Green’s resolution.
Even More Reason Now
American attitudes towards impeachment have kept pace with the news of unconstitutional conduct by the President. New polling from the state of Washington shows an even more dramatic support for impeachment from rural voters, finding that “[a] majority of voters in Eastern and Central Washington support impeachment.” These regions of the state are home to the 4th and 5th Districts, represented by the Republicans Michael Baumgartner and Dan Newhouse, both staunch Trump supporters. The Civiqs poll shows 53% in support of impeachment, with 48% strongly and 5% somewhat in favor.
Impeachment is a cut and dry solution to the lawlessness of this executive branch. The Constitution calls for it, the American people want it, all that remains is for those with the power to initiate the process, find their courage, and get the ball rolling.
The House Needs to Take Action
Unfortunately, members of Congress continue to fail to meet the moment, even when they agree that the time for impeachment is now. In May, members of Congress claimed that Americans did not want impeachment. Rep. Becca Balint (D, VT-AL) rationalized backing down from her recorded unequivocal support of impeachment by saying, that “ultimately, at this moment, the American people are not with us in that…in that movement.”
House Democrats’ Ranking Member on the Oversight Committee, Rep. Robert Garcia (D‑CA), has no such excuse. When he was asked about impeachment, Rep Garcia responded “Obviously, President Trump has been impeached twice — and let’s be clear, he commits crimes on a weekly basis and violates the Constitution consistently. I think impeachment is so serious, and such a monumental debate. It happens not just in Congress, but across the country. That’s a decision that needs to be driven by wide consensus in the caucus and our leadership.” He went on to claim that “that’s not where we’re at right now.”
Rep. Garcia, the American people disagree. We, the People, want impeachment. 84% of Democrats wanted impeachment back in April. Furthermore, it appears that in at least some rural districts impeachment is rapidly becoming a winning proposition. If you can recognize that the President’s actions are unconstitutional, you must recognize that your responsibility is to protect and defend the Constitution. Now.
As the evidence continues to roll in, it’s imperative that leaders across the nation recognize that there is already nationwide consensus in favor of impeachment, that they must uphold their oath, and they must move to protect and defend the Constitution by impeaching Donald J. Trump.
