An Open Letter to Nellie Pou

We ask our members to bring a short statement to meetings with their member of congress to highlight how this administration has harmed them and their community, and why they want their representative to be a leader on impeachment. This is one such story.

If you want to meet your representative, email legislative@citizensimpeachment.com — we will organize that meeting for you.

To Congresswoman Nellie Pou, representative for New Jersey’s ninth congressional district:

My decision to relocate from Florida to New Jersey last year was not a simple change of scenery; it was a necessary escape. I left a state where the political agenda—marked by an alarming surge in book bans, lax gun safety laws, and the erosion of fundamental rights surrounding abortion and women’s healthcare—made my family feel unsafe. I came to New Jersey seeking safety and better opportunity, yet, even here, that safety is now under direct assault. The unlawful deployment of the National Guard and the aggressive, sweeping ICE raids that are terrorizing communities across our state are not merely political actions; they are instruments of fear. I am frightened.

My husband and I are Puerto Rican. He was born and raised on the island. We understand intimately what the current administration and right-wing activists think of us, having heard the rhetoric that calls the place our family calls home “an island of garbage.” Let me be clear: Puerto Ricans are American citizens and part of the United States. But in the eyes of this administration, we are treated as second-class citizens.

When this administration suggests deporting “criminals” who are, in fact, US citizens, and when we see the dramatic increase in the deportation of people who are here legally, ripped from their lives and sent to countries they have never known, we are witnessing a catastrophic breakdown of American justice.

This administration operates with zero regard for the rule of law and due process. The actions we are seeing are not about security; they are blatant racial profiling and a weaponization of government power.

Who is to say this will not happen to my husband? To me? To our families?

Congresswoman Pou, as you are the first Latina from New Jersey to serve in Congress and a proud Puerto Rican, I ask you to understand this crisis from a deeply personal, human, and constitutional place. The fight for impeachment is not just a political maneuver; it is a moral imperative to protect our people, this community, restore due process, and defend our democracy.

I do not want to wait until my family is torn apart to act, because at this point it feels like it is only a matter of time. We must act now.
