Citizens’ Impeachment has been saying since April that right now is the time to impeach, convict, remove Donald J. Trump from his office as President of the United States. Rep. Jamie Raskin, ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, agreed with us recently when he said:
“The minute that somebody in public office decides that they’re a king…that’s the time for the people to evict, eject, reject, impeach, try, convict, and start all over again.”
Raskin is right. We owe it to our neighbors, our children, our friends, and ourselves to act decisively in service of liberty and justice for all. It’s time to uphold the Constitution, to aim for that more perfect union, and to choose the moral and ethical path forward, no matter how afraid we may be. That fear is our humanity speaking, reminding us just how needed we are. Have courage.
Rep. Raskin is one of the key people with the agency and power to start impeachment proceedings. His declaration that it is time to begin is progress. Citizens’ Impeachment stands ready to help Rep. Raskin — and any other U.S. representative — willing to take the essential step of introducing articles of impeachment. As the ranking member on the Judiciary Committee, Rep. Raskin can easily show his support for impeachment by introducing or co-sponsoring articles and calling for the caucus to support them. To date, Rep. Raskin has taken no steps and has not introduced articles to put his words into action.
Impeachment is the citizens’ right
America was founded on our right to petition our government for a redress of grievances. In many ways, this key tenet of the First Amendment is the load-bearing foundation of our Constitution, our most critical right that enforces all other rights. It is our job as citizens — our moral and ethical obligation — to hold our government accountable to the Constitution and to demand a return to constitutional principles when our government strays.
This is doubly true when our leaders refuse to act.
The standard for impeaching a government official is any “attempt to subvert the Constitution.” The deployment of U.S. Marines on U.S soil and the nationalization of the National Guard are just the latest in a litany of the ways Trump has actively subverted the Constitution. This moment has been and continues to be a constitutional crisis. The best time to impeach was yesterday. The second best time is now.
Time is a luxury we must not squander. The courageous thing to do is to channel Paul Revere, not Paul Ryan. Even if it seems like the hard thing, it is the right thing to do.
We the People — and the Constitution — cannot wait. The time to impeach is now.
There is no question that Trump is an unfit president. There is no question that he and his administration are regularly pursuing unconstitutional actions. Successful elections in the midterms will not undo the damage being done right now to our government, our institutions, and our people.
Depending on electoral success in the midst of a current and ongoing crisis is irresponsible. It is business-as-usual. But these are emphatically and unquestionably not normal times.
We have the power to demand change, right now. If we wait to stand up for impeachment, conviction, and removal of Donald Trump, we normalize lawlessness and allow the destruction of our democratic institutions and traditions, including the Constitution and the rule of law.
On Sunday, House Speaker Mike Johnson warned, “If the Democrats took over control of the House, I guarantee you that they would try to impeach President Trump in the first week of that new Congress in January ’27.”
We do not have to wait. We have the evidence we need. Now, as citizens and representatives alike, let’s answer the call.
