December 18, Washington DC — Citizens’ Impeachment calls on Representative Shri Thanedar to force a vote on the impeachment of Peter B. Hegseth, Secretary of Defense of the United States under Rule IX and put an end to the U.S. military escalation off the coast of Venezuela. This would be the next step forward for H. Res. 935 after its introduction to the House on December 9, 2025.

Thanedar’s impeachment resolution forces a full house vote within 48 hours of filing, and puts a spotlight on Secretary Hegseth’s use of extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean, with a particular focus on the September 2, 2025 “double-tap” bombing. “The reckless, incompetent Secretary of Defense is uniquely unqualified for his role,” said Thanedar.  “Every day, it becomes clearer that he is engaging in unlawful, illegal activity.” In addition to the extrajudicial killings, Thanedar’s H.Res 935 impeaches Hegseth for the willful mishandling of classified information. In March, the Secretary conducted strikes in Yemen through the encrypted messaging platform Signal, an action which put troops’ lives at risk. The breach of classified material was accidentally exposed when the administration invited a journalist, Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic, to the group chat.

Citizens’ Impeachment has endorsed H. Res 935. “We commend Representative Thanedar for exercising his constitutional authority, rooted in the rule of law and the defense of American sovereignty, to hold this government official accountable,” said Executive Director Keira Havens. “Our troops, and our national security, deserve better than Secretary Hegseth.” Citizens’ Impeachment, a nonpartisan, grassroots organization uniting everyday Americans with the single mission to impeach, convict, and remove officials who violate their oaths of office, pledged to support this vote by encouraging their 6,000+ volunteers to call their Representatives to support this vote, as well as to call Thanedar’s office to support him.

“As an Armed Forces veteran, I was particularly moved to action because the murder of shipwrecked survivors is a centuries-old example of an unambiguously unlawful order prohibited in both U.S. and international law,” said Havens. “His violation of this rule set off a chain of events that led to 140 Democratic Reps voting for President Trump’s impeachment, and we believe that a majority of Representatives would be more than justified in voting to impeach Secretary Hegseth for his conduct.”
